Week 4: Progress Isn’t Linear — But It Is Real

A candid weekly look at navigating burnout, rebuilding, and finding my next role.

This past week reminded me of something I already knew intellectually, but am still learning emotionally:

Recovery doesn’t move in a straight line.

Some days felt focused and productive. Others were heavy, quiet, or emotionally draining. And yet, when I step back and look at the week as a whole, something important is clear:

I’m moving forward — even when it doesn’t always feel like it in the moment.

Finding My Rhythm (Again)

My morning routine continues to be the most stabilizing force in my days. Even on lower-energy mornings, having a familiar structure helps keep me grounded:

  • getting dressed

  • making Zipfizz

  • listening to music

  • reading the news

  • watching coding and gaming streams

  • easing into the day instead of rushing it

Some mornings included exercise, others didn’t — and I’m learning to let that flexibility exist without guilt. Listening to my body has become just as important as maintaining structure.

Sleep has also been slowly improving. While I still wake up a couple of times most nights, I’m waking up feeling more rested than I was even a few weeks ago. That alone has made a noticeable difference in my energy and mood.

MoveableEats: Meaningful Momentum

One of the biggest positives this week was the progress I made on MoveableEats.

I spent several days hunting down and fixing bugs, and I’m confident that the truck owner side of the app is now complete and stable. That’s a milestone I’ve been working toward for a long time.

Later in the week, I shifted from pure coding into launch preparation:

  • setting up the website

  • starting the domain process

  • thinking through email and infrastructure needs

  • preparing for eventual app store submission

What stood out most wasn’t just the progress — it was how it felt.
Working on something that’s fully mine, without deadlines or pressure, reminded me why I fell in love with building software in the first place.

Emotional Waves and Learning to Ride Them

This week also brought a few emotional dips.

A wave of delayed grief from a couple of things surfaced midweek, bringing a day of heavier depression and lower motivation. Therapy helped, but it didn’t erase the feelings entirely — and that’s okay.

Instead of forcing productivity, I leaned into rest:

  • watching TV

  • playing The Witcher 3

  • reading before bed

  • letting myself sleep early

What felt different this time is that the wave passed.
It didn’t derail the entire week. It didn’t undo the progress I’d already made.

I’m learning that emotional lows don’t mean I’m failing — they’re just part of the process.

Connection, Even on Quiet Days

Social interaction continues to be one of the most important factors for my mental health right now.

This week included:

  • friends stopping by

  • dinners with family

  • lunch with my dad and aunt (the first time seeing my dad in months)

  • time with my grandparents

  • meaningful conversations with close friends

Even when I didn’t feel especially social, these moments helped anchor my days and reminded me that I’m not navigating this alone.

Joy, Comfort, and Small Wins

There were plenty of small but meaningful bright spots:

  • finishing The Witcher 3

  • Battle Beast concert streams

  • watching wrestling moments that were unexpectedly emotional

  • setting up future plans, like movie tickets with a friend

  • finally cooking the chicken and sausage jambalaya I’d been putting off for days

None of these things are life-changing on their own — but together, they create a sense of normalcy and forward motion.

Where I’m At Now

At the end of this week, I’d describe my state like this:

  • I’m still recovering from burnout

  • I still have days where depression shows up

  • But my routine is holding

  • My sleep is improving

  • My focus is returning

  • My sense of purpose is rebuilding

  • And I’m starting to trust myself again

Progress isn’t loud.
Sometimes it looks like watching Twitch instead of spiraling.
Sometimes it looks like fixing one more bug.
Sometimes it looks like showing up for family when it’s hard.

And sometimes, progress looks like simply getting through the week.

Looking Ahead

As I move into the next week, my goals remain intentionally simple:

  • continue following my routine

  • keep making steady progress on MoveableEats

  • apply for roles without pressure

  • prioritize sleep and recovery

  • stay connected to people

  • be patient with myself

This journey isn’t about rushing to the finish line — it’s about rebuilding something sustainable.

Thanks for following along.
